Quartz sand processing

1. The dry quartz sand processing plant mainly consists of stone breaking machine, stone crusher and vibrating screen. In the first step of the process, silica materials will be broken into small pieces by the stone breaking machine. Next, the pieces will be crushed into sand particles. Then, the particles will go to the vibrating screen for screening, where a magnetic stick will dispose of iron minerals. After these steps, the particles will be conveyed to the storage area.

2. The wet quartz sand processing plant mainly consists of stone breaking machine, stone crusher, barn, vibrating screen and waterway system. The process mainly includes the following steps. First, the silica materials will be broken into small pieces by the stone breaking machine. Next, the pieces will be crushed into sand particles. In the crushing process, we keep adding water into the chamber and the sand particles will flow with the water into the sedimentation tank. Then the sand particles will be transferred to the barn where they will be dried. After that, the particles will go to the vibrating screen for screening, where a magnetic stick will dispose of iron minerals. Through these steps, the particles will be conveyed to the storage area.

Quartz sand separation

The beneficiation and purification craft of the quartz sand has many technological processes. To conform which is the best and reasonable one, it is usually based on the impurities types, content, occurrence mode and the product quality of the quartz sand. The most common beneficiation and purification craft and technological process of the quartz sand presented below:

Scrubbing and desliming

In the weathering and sedimenting process of quartz sand, a large amount of clay minerals and iron minerals will form cement or adhesion minerals on the surface of silica. Therefore, we usually dispose of clay, impurities and part of iron films through scrubbing, grading and desliming. The process serves as pretreatment of sand separation, in which clay impurities will be cleaned efficiently.

Generally, limonite, tourmaline, hematite and biotite are the most commonly found impurities in quartz sand. All these impurities, with weak and strong magnetism, can only be sorted out by magnetic separation. In practice, we often use crusher, wet magnetic machine to perform the separation process. For example, after carrying out the scrubbing and desliming process to quartz sand sedimentation obtained from a lake, we get sand containing 0.36% of Fe203. Then, we utilize SHP-500 type wet magnetic machine to purify the processed sand. Through the process, we get fine quartz sand containing less than 0.1% of Fe203.

By using stick scrubbing technique, we can enhance the performance of scrubbing on the one hand. On the other hand, an appropriate amount of steel stick in the process could change the size of sand particles, laying mineralogical foundation for further separation of quartz sand. The flotation process can dispose of feldspar, with hydrofluoric acid being the most commonly used liquid in overseas market. For example, the British Industrial Sand Corporation affiliated ore separation factory obtained high-grade quartz sand containing 99.5% of SiO2, 0.007% of Fe2O3 and 0.1% of AL202 by adopting the stick scrubbing-desliming-magnetic separation-flotation process.

After the scrubbing, magnetic separation and flotation process, we almost have cleaned off all the mineral impurities (including single particles and their collection) with a large proportion in the quartz sand. The proportion of SiO2 in the quartz sand can reach 99.5% to 99.9%, meeting the demand of most industries for quartz sand. However, if we want to get even more purified quartz sand, we have to perform acid leaching process to impurities on the surface of the sand, mostly in the form of spot or inclusion. We can adjust the concentration and proportion of the acid in accordance with the requirement of specific industries in terms of impurities (Pe, Al, Ti, and Cr) mixed in the quartz sand.
